Houkago Princess: Dress Up
When I first wrote about Houkago Princess, I mentioned that they are idols that you can dress up.
You can read that post here.

Here is a sub video with the group and producer from their White Base theater talking about their concept idols you can dress up , student council theme ,idol dreams.

Houkago Princess: White Base
Houkago Princess a group from Ikebukuro ,Tokyo that we have written about in the past ,has this small ,tiny in fact theater in Ikebukuro called White Base .Recently a live concert/graduation was filmed at this theater .HouPri is a good up and coming group .
Their vocals are a little higher pitched then other groups ,but it blends well.
At the end of part two and into part three the group plays some games and in the final part is the member graduation and an outside look at White Base.
If you are wondering who the leader is it`s Nana [center row 1 photo], who is older than her tiny self and voice seems.

Meika's Music for Thought #2
Here's the second installment of "Meika's Music for Thought"! As I commented in my first post, I'll try my best to be kinder to the newer groups, but that doesn't mean that I still won't be honest about my thoughts. So hopefully you can be honest about YOUR thoughts, too, and comment about them below!
Idol Class - Makeru na Dreamer
In the beginning of the song, I like how nice the guitar and piano couple each other to make an awesome, slow entrance. The first part of vocals sound really sweet and the instrumental that backs them up really makes it sound great! In the first verse, the vocals and their unity went slightly downhill, but they still made it through and the harmonies were a nice surprise and effort. The instrumental starts to sound a little unchanged and boring as the song progresses, but when it gets to the chorus and instrumental break, the awesomeness just picks up again! And the vocals that go with it sound continue to sweet and adorable, although still a little un-united and "bad" at times. The mixing was mediocre, but the majority of the music and vocals made me look past it. ^.^b
When the PV started, I thought it was fun and cute how the girls were splashing each other with water. Maybe it's because some of the girls were screaming and trying to avoid getting wet, but whatever it was, I giggled and smiled throughout the whole scene! :P The corridor scenes were really simple, but it was okay when matched with the girls' charisma and spirit. The close ups were a bit awkward for the most part with their gestures, eye contact, facial expressions... Mostly everything, but it got better as the PV progressed. The "candid", I guess you could call them, shots of the girls were well done with the shakiness of the camera, the lighting and the faded tint. Or at least in my eyes.
I found the panning of the dance shot at the back of the auditorium really cool for some reason... And I have no idea why. O.O The shakiness of the camera, again, looked actually wonderful with the close-up shots of the girls and not weird at all. Maybe because it makes it look more... Edgy or something? ^.^; The start of the dance with the girls turning around at different cues was also simple but worked wonderfully well with the "Oomph" parts of the music. The dance during the instrumental break made me giggle a little since it wasn't as energetic and climatic as I'm used to, though that doesn't mean that it wasn't bad because it wasn't. The overall choreography was a lot better than that I have seen from other Indies group and they made it even better to watch with the enthusiasm they showcased.
Overall, I give it a 8.6/10; Lost a little points with some aspects of the song and PV, but it was still a great piece!
P.S. One of the girls looked like Kitarie (Kitahara Rie, AKB48 Team B and my Oshi!!!) for me, especially in her first close-up! YEAH!!! :DDD Can you spot her? :o
Angel from MG - Angel
Angel from MG - Angel
As the song started, I was mesmerized by the switching of mono channels. I always like those kind of effects because it sounds... Well, I can't describe it, but I always say it's "3D", for some reason. Especially when you listen through earphones or headphones. The music after was really rockin'! I think I said this before, but usually "pure rock"-sounding songs bore me. This time around, though, that one other effect in the instrumental made the instruments sound better! The echoing voice was an okay touch; what made me not like it completely was the pronunciation of some words. YES, I know they're not fluent in English, but it still kind of annoyed me. XD The instrumental after that sounded too familiar to another general rock song, but I still liked it a lot. :P I felt their voices kind of went off beat with the music at times, were shaky and they could've put more feeling into their voices, but they sounded good together. Some of the voice-enhancing effects felt unnecessary; at those points, I would've preferred that they left it natural. Overall, it's an above average song... I think I'd put it on my iPod for me to like with time. ^.^
Fading into the start, I was surprised to see the girls in a dance studio about to... Well, dance. :P I find the setting dull and boring to look at, but their dancing saved that; I'll talk about that later, though. ;) The stage setting during the live looked very chic, modern and stylish and their outfits were very idolish, cute, and petite with a little punk lolita flair. The lights, though... OH GOSH, THE LIGHTS!!!! They burned my eyes and made me have a mental seizure! NO MORE LIGHTS! >.<
I was honestly anticipating when colour would come into the picture, and I was glad to see that happen in the second chorus. Seeing the individual colours of the girls during the live made the outfits even cuter than before.
NOW the dance... Oh my goodness, their dancing... THEIR DANCING!!! <33333 It was so brilliant! The choreography, the energy, the mood, the unity, EVERYTHING!!! That is honestly all I can say about the dance because it leaves me near speechless.
Overall, I give it a... Actually, this is hard to rank because the song is alright, the PV was kind of boring, and the dance was amazing... Eeeh, maybe 7.9/10? Because the PV deducted some points, but it was some of the song and DEFINITELY the dancing that saved me there! <3
Dempagumi.inc - Kuchizuke Kibonnu
The guitar entrance was really simple, but felt... Comfy, I guess you could call it. I also think that the faded vocals during that part complemented the music well. In the first verse, the comfiness continues but the music goes more "complex" in just a little way. Like it doesn't sound as simple as the entrance. It's really relaxing~! -0-The voices are totally dainty and cute. I prefer lower voices more often, though these voices work well with the music. The chorus is catchy and adorable, yet still maintains the comfy factor! ^.^b Even though I was caught off guard by the rap, that was totally awesome! It reminded me of 575 by Perfume. :D I find high voices rapping weird 'cause it's out of the ordinary, but so wonderful at the same time BECAUSE it's out of the ordinary! The slowed down part of the song was pleasant to listen to! It was like a lullaby, especially when sung by those angelic voices! <3 The whole song was very homey and lovely!

When the PV first started, I was thinking, "Are you serious? Pictures throughout the whole thing? BORING~!!" But then I got it; it was like a story was being told through pictures! THEN my view became, "... OH MY GOSH, THAT'S SO COOL~!!!" and I still think that! They really used the pictures well and in a creative, fun way! The member intros in the beginning looked really plain but that's what I liked about it! Like it wasn't flashy and it didn't need to be because it looked real. The pictures after that were ordered in a nice manner, even including "pans" and going to the beats of the song! I admired the "effects" that the... "Picture Changer", if you will, did to the pictures, like changing the pictures fast to make the girl look like she was running (1:27) and showing pictures of the members that sang (I'm assuming, I don't know the members but I might soon! :D 3:17) The pictures were really well taken and whoever the photographer was, I need to pat them on the back.
Overall, I give it a 9.3/10; The song was great to listen to, but the PV is what really made this! <3 SIMPLICITY!
Houkago Princess - Uchuu Ichi no Christmas
A Christmas review to end! Well, the song is better than their first song, in my opinion, though still not amazing and outstanding. But the instrumental is lovable and upbeat, even if it may seem too similar to another general idol song. Their voices are as cute as ever and they really sound like princesses! The guitar solo was pretty cool and added an edgy twist to the otherwise adorable music. I find the way the lines in the chorus flow incredibly catchy and will probably be stuck in my head for quite a while. ^.^''' Besides that, this song will definitely add happiness to whatever holiday you celebrate!
The crowding around each other and laughing at the start of the PV... I'd be lying if I said that wasn't cheesy at all and I loved it... 'Cause it was cheesy and I was bluntly like "WTF" upon its arrival. They look pretty in their Santa costumes, though! :D I didn't know what the purpose of the circle, hand holding was, but I didn't like it either. XD However, the close-ups were an improvement! I found some of the shots kind of awkward, just like in the first video for the same reasons, but they looked like they tried their best for the most part, and I applaud them for that. Plus, the background during the non-Santa close-ups looked gorgeous with the blurred lights! Haha, I thought the posing in front of the camera and a photo being taken was extremely awesome! They looked like they opened up at that time and I giggled as I watched.
BUT the dance was the best part of the PV! After their trainwreck in their debut PV, I was actually worried they weren't going to improve since the choreo in that was INCREDIBLY simple. (OR at least in my eyes) To my delight, though, the dance this time around was more complex (Yet still simple again ^.^;) but they managed to be united with each other for the majority of the time and show more charisma and effort. They certainly improved from last time and let's hope they continue to do that!
Overall, I give it a 7.4/10; still kind of average, but their improvement is admirable to me!
Wow, honestly didn't mean to be THAT kind, (That was worded in a bad way XD) but all the PV's were just great this time around! As said before, please share your thoughts and thanks for reading!

Tsunku And The Indies #17
I almost forgot about this episode, because I have been so busy. This episode we have part two of the dart game episode .Tsunku can throw a good game as well.
Overall I feel the show is starting to slip a bit I the creativity department , but what I am excited about is Tsunku has taken the show one step beyond the television , by producing live single day concert festivals with the groups on the show.

Tsunku And The Indies #15
Sorry that I could not get this up yesterday as I had other commitments. This week we get to see more of the recording. I am still on the fence as to if I like the song or not just yet , but as long as Tsunku keeps helping out Indie Idols and growing this genre ,I am in his corner on this show.
This episode it`s hard to pick who has the best voice ,they are all so special in their own way and you may want to watch it more then once just to take in all the voices recording today.

Tsunku and Indie Idols Week 12
Tsunku and Indie Idols Week 12
Sorry for the lateness of this as I am currently not feeling well.
This week Tsunku brings in more groups to sing for his pleasure or scout for Aichan`s replacement as this show is feeling more and more like a giant audition.
We have the H!P guest ,Afilia intimidated by the size of one Possible member and the weekly required Possible promotions.
More or less it`s the same thing we have seen for the last 11 episodes. As entertaining as it is to see Indies on a national stage ,there is a lot to be said about AKB48 having a TV/Music producer as boss. Will somebody fire a Dodgeball or a pie at somebody once please ,lol.

dempagumi.Inc: More Moe Love
dempagumi.Inc: More Moe Love
dempagumi.Inc [not -Tenpa Gumi.inc as some outlets printed] is another cafe idol unit, which is making a name for themselves in Akihabara and are set to make their mark on hopefully a larger scale.
dempagumi.Inc, the brainchild of Moe Japan and members of the Akihabara Live & Bar Dear Stage cafe are making a move to a sub label of TOY`S FACTORY [Known for Mr. Children and more] called MEME TOKYO.
Their first release under MEME TOKYO will be November 16 and will be called "Future Driver".
dempagumi.Inc is a group that is hard not to like, with looks right out of an anime and creative costumes, this unit is the flag wavers for the idea of idol moe.
dempagumi.Inc is made up of some interesting members, each one bringing their own style and cuteness as well as Akihabara charm.
The members are
Aizawa Risa -Risa is the group’s artist and manga reader.
Furukawa Mirin -Mirin, Mirin is an idol that is hard to describe, simply because she loves video games so much, that her wish is to marry her computer, just so she can play games all day.
Mirin is the member you most likely will track down at an Akihabara arcade .This kindhearted idol is a world of fun, so much, so that she just may play a game with you, if your paths cross in an arcade.
Yumemi Nemu -Nemu is sleepy idol .When sleepy is awake she can be found acting as the groups D.J., Flamingo dancer and Ustream talk show host.
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/15245965
Naruse Emi -Emi is the groups self declared Ohtaku and really that is about all it is to her, lol.
Atobe-Miu -Life is hard sometimes being a goddess .You see there is just one thing you need to know about Miu ,she is this units version of Sayumi . Ultimate cuteness and loves pink ,what more needs to be said ,lol.
These underground idols, like all the idols that have been featured on PIH, make up of a part of the very large portion of the heart this genre. Idol genre is not mainly about the 48`s and H!P`s of the world ,they are the exceptions. Idol genre`s heart and main pool of talent has always been the Indie and Underground scene . The little known or cared about by major media Idols that bring happiness and entertainment at the end of a stressful workday. The 100`s of groups carving out a profitable place ,in their own terms away from the bright lights of the big stages.
A video look at these up and coming idols
Feature look at this unit ,and their home base

NOTE - I hit the wrong key , the name is dempagumi , not denpagumi ,I have now fixed it .Thanks ,Shura .
EDIT FUTURE DRIVER PV
For those who asked by mail- they are not a vocaloid group ,they are an Idol genre Pop Group.

Fresh Faces: Ricotta★Veil, Sweet Ricotta, Mercy Lapin Mini Live
Fresh Faces: Ricotta★Veil, Sweet Ricotta, Mercy Lapin Mini Live
I am returning to this unit that I previewed not long ago , because one I enjoy this unit and two they have made some adjustments that are not captured properly in that post. It would really help if they had a true web site and not just member blogs.
Ricotta★Veil is an odd group as it is really three groups in one and which unit it is depends who is on the stage at any given time.
Therefore, I will try to explain. Officially currently Ricotta★Veil is often listed and promoted by Hasegawa Risa and Ito Ayami .Sweet Ricotta who also performs with RV is currently simply Nagayoshi Asuka .Simple right ? , not really .Asuka after performing will leave the stage and Risa and Ayami who often start their lives will return for an MC after a costume change .Near the end of the MC Asuka will return to the stage dressed exactly as Risa and Ayami and the three magically become Ricotta★Veil . Confused yet, no, good because it gets even better.
At some point in their lives Asuka, will MC and Risa and Ayami will leave the stage and change costumes and return as a group called Mercy Lapin and many times Risa and Ayami will start the live as Mercy Lapin. In addition, just to make this roster shuffle more interesting there is often another idol in Sweet Ricotta that plays no role in Ricotta★Veil and that member has changed several times as well.
Therefore, Ricotta★Veil can be all things to everyone at all times.
Now if I have not completely confused you all three along with other Kansai Idols have been part of a super unit called KISS x KISS.
Getting away from the who is in what unit Ricotta★Veil and Sweet Ricotta members depend on information releases through their individual blogs and through a growing local cult fan following. Interestingly while these idols are still new and growing , they have managed thanks to fan YouTube postings to start to pick up a following in such places as Eastern Europe and Latin America with their videos being reposted in various video media outlets.
Following this unit can often be hard as they currently do not really travel outside of the Kansai region and as I said earlier, you pretty much have to depend on staying plugged into their blogs and their wota fan base for late breaking news and to make travel plans for event dates. Ricotta★Veil and Sweet Ricotta at times put the term underground in underground idols.
However when your two paths finally meet up it`s a magical moment.

Tsunku And Indie Idols.
Tsunku And Indie Idols.
When Tsunku`s new TV show first aired ,I didn`t think much about it ,then episode two aired and it became clear that this show had two goals .1. Show the Possible in swimsuits every episode and make Afilia Saga East show regulars. 2. Promote the roof off the building with Indie idols, many who we have covered and many we will cover.
In these six weeks ,it`s becoming clear to me ,that Tsunku is going down the same path that many of us have before him and never left, and that is the Indies are a great branch of the genre to hang out in. There are no Oricon battles or agency jealousy in Indies, just groups from several companies that often perform together at the same lives.
Tsunku has a smile about him on TV that he doesn`t seem to have anymore around H!P TV it seems and he flat out adores Afilia Saga East [smart man ,adore the girls in charge of a food and drink cafe].
Say what you will about Tsunku and for me ,I am not a big fan of his H!P songs lately , he is doing something bold here and I respect him for that . He is giving the lesser-known Indies a chance to shine on a larger stage ,while keeping H!P almost completely out of the show ,so that the Indies have a fair chance to grow.
This show will help the genre in so many ways , no matter how long it may last , be it long or short ,the genre will be much healthier thanks to this show .
As long as Tsunku travels down my genre road of Indie Idols ,I`ll be there to support him and to watch .
The Indie Idols are a wonderful place ,while many will never give them a chance because they are not AkiP or H!P units ,I can say honestly it`s your loss if you don`t , because your missing something truly special by overlooking the Indies.
Don`t believe me ,see for yourself ,the last three weeks of Tsunku`s show and decide for yourself.
The following episodes have more Indie Idols then you can count on one show .
Ep 4
Ep 5
EP 6 [BiS and AeLL join the Idol army this week]
Note- anytime the sound cuts out ,it`s just broadcasting rights issues over that song being aired online.

[Idol Spotlight] Chu!☆Lips
My first Idol Spotlight after a LONG hiatus (real life beckons, you know how it is...) is Chu!☆Lips, a veteran idol group that is managed under the label South to North Records where it also manages other idol acts such as Feam and KiSS&KiSS.
I see from the comments of Gaki mentioned in his last "Fresh Faces" post, that some of you guys may have heard of them already. And rightfully so, because they have been around since 2005, right when AKB48 also had their start that same year. Strangely enough I did not come across them until Gaki told me about them last year. But it was an interesting experience diving back in time for their past materials.
Chu!☆Lips got their first break back in 2005 with their first single "Kiss Kiss Kiss Arashi" which was used for TBS's anime "Gokiburi-chan". Since then, they have continued to produce more music in singles and DVDs as they become more popular. But rather than bidding for the mainstream playground, interestingly Chu!☆Lips chose to continue to perform in live events as an indie idol group. However, this is where they are at their best, and dare I say, has established themselves as the most popular indie/underground idol group to date. Chu!☆Lips is well known for their entertainment factor in their performances, singing, and interaction with the fans. Their style is such that I could pick any of their song and use it for a movie opener. And it has been proven too, since some of their songs have been used for movie ending soundtrack, game OST and even for a cheerleading group.
Now, in any live shows or concerts, you will almost definitely see Chu!☆Lips gracing the performer's line-up.
Like any other long time idol groups, Chu!☆Lips had their share of graduations and new members.
Now only two original members remained in their 4 member line-up, with which they released their latest single "The Golden Chups", AND they played the "bandol" card this time too (much to my delight :-) ).
Their last single prior to The Golden Chups was 15 months ago in December 2009 with "Koi no Geemu Oshiete" (also ED theme for PC game Genegetsu no Pandora), but there's a reason for it. Apparently they were supposed to stop their Japan activities in 2010 and perform in China, but for some reason the plan was derailed and they had to return to Japan to continue their act.
Personally, I find that for a group that had such a longevity, high recognition amongst mainstream and indies, connections with movie/game music, and even eyed the China market like AKB48 and Morning Musume did... but they still remained an underground idol unit. Don't the members or their agency have the aspiration to go mainstream at all?
During a magazine interview in conjunction to their 4th single release in 2008, member Nacchin expressed her wish to have their singles appear in at least Oricon Top 100, after one week since the single has been released. Member Rio hopes that one day Chu!☆Lips would be featured in Mechaike in a "Okajo"-like segment.
So what happened? Did their run not go smoothly as planned? Or was it by their own principle and volition that they currently prefer to remain indie, where there are no mainstream cliche and stereotypes to limit their entertainment creativity?
Either way, I'm sure there will be more of Chu!☆Lips to come, whichever direction they choose to take.
Trivia - Former member Kasai Rion, who graduated from Chu!☆Lips in 2007 is elder sister to AKB48 Team B member Kasai Tomomi. Rion then joined another idol group "Survive" but the group disbanded the next year (although Survive revived itself 2 years later but that's another story). Looks like Rion didn't get enjoy the same success in showbiz like her sister did.

[Idol Spotlight] Tomato n'Pine ~ Tomapai
Tomato n'Pine, also known as Tomapai for short, is an indies idol unit initially formed in 2009 consisting of "Season 1" members Kanaki Jyun and Koike Yui as a duo. They were 2008 Miss Magazine finalist (organised by Weekly Shonen Magazine) and coincidentally since they share the same birthday 4th April 1991 and so formed an idol unit releasing their first CD debut album "Life is Beautiful" on 4th April 2009.
However in that same year, Kanaki decided to focus on her studies and announced her exit from the group (subsequently from showbiz altogether) and 2 more girls joined Tomapai as "Season 2" members thereby forming a trio. Koike then used the moniker YUI while the other 2 girls are HINA (Kusano Hinako) and WADA (Wada Erika). With this new lineup Tomapai released "Captain wa kimi da!" in May 2010. The trio continued the tradition of juggling their singing act along with their modelling and acting jobs.
Firstly, they performed mostly only live events like the Tokyo Idol Festival 2010 where they performed their own original works and also perform covers of songs by mainstream idols. So if fans wants to keep track of their future activities and whereabouts, they have to visit the official website or the newspapers/magazines. This is important because their CDs were only sold at the live shows where they performed. (Now you can order online e.g. Tower Records)
Regarding recording labels, like most indies acts Tomapai formed their own label T&P (Tomato N'Pine Tokyo) to represent and produce themselves. With the exception of only their first single "Captain wa kimi da!" which was produced by agehasprings who has produced the likes of Yuzu, CHARA and Ito Yuna.
Tomapai made heavy use of the internet to promote themselves, such as Youtube, MySpace, Twitter and Ustream. Other than that, Tomapai worked on some radio shows and have their own internet streaming broadcast. On television, they are regulars on NTV's "Idolchin" /, along with other idol groups such as Momoiro Clover and members from "Idoling!!!".
Currently Tomapai is bracing for their major debut produced by Sony Music Entertainment / Sony Records with their latest single "Tabitachi Transfer" set to release in 9th March 2011, which I have really high expectations for.
Personally, I think Tomapai could become really successful. Each of the members are already known in their respective modelling and acting works, so it should help in achieving higher recognition. Perhaps soon they can be as popular, if not more, than Momoiro Clover, another idol group with indies background. So if you are into high school girls doing dance-alongs and singing, Tomato N'Pine might just be the one for you.

Fight Idol Fight
Fight Idol Fight
What Happens, when the producer of Hello! Project Tsunku has a lot of free time on his hands. He creates this newest Idol craze. Actually, this idea mixes professional women’s wrestling called Joshi Puroresu and Idols.
So how does this brainchild of Tsunku affect Idols? see for yourself.
Who said a game of musical chairs is not violent
What happens when you put a idol in the ring with a professional wrestler ?
Much more to see below.
They say that all great men in history have either the mind of a mad man or genius, I am not sure which one this falls under, I just know that you will hit replay more then once. Lol
To see this madness or work of a genius in all it`s wonderful glory just go here and enjoy all the videos that feature, professional wrestlers and every possible type of idol you can think of.
In fact, I strongly suggest that everyone go to this link and watch this stuff to get a better understanding of the mind of Tsunku.

Indie Idol Groups Battle For Major Label Debut
Indie Idol Groups Battle For Major Label Debut
Ten Indie Idol groups are set to battle it out for major label fame, under the watchful eyes of talent management Horipro and television network Tokyo MX. This battle is called the "U.M.U Award 2010," and the competition will pit local idols from around the country against each other for the chance to make their major label debut.
You maybe asking yourself, what does a major talent management agency like Horipro have to do with ten unknown idol groups, locked in a pitch battle for a major label debut.
Well the answer is simple outside of being the sponsor, several of the unit’s members are under contract to Horipro and some even have a much bigger idol job as members of Idoling!!!
[Several of the Idoling!!! members also perform in regional idol groups owned by their talent management firms”]
For the most part the girls in these groups are simply looking for a chance to break out of their local and regional strong holds, to national fame.
Thanks to Horipro and the television network Tokyo MX, one lucky group will get that chance.
The final round of the audition is scheduled for December 27 at the Galaxy Theatre in Tennozu Isle, Tokyo.
Currently six groups have been selected, they are
* Ringo Musume (Aomori)
* Negicco (Niigata)
* Pieace (Saitama)
* Mira Maria (Tokyo)
* Nagoya Meibutsu! Aijou Iinkai (Aichi)
* PixyChicks (Nara)
Three more units will be announced later and the 10th and final unit will come from the "JUMP UP!! ~IDOL Pro Ama Battle Royale~" competition being held the day before the finals (December 26)
