AKB48 Sets New History Record

AKB48 Sets New History Record

The “Kouhaku Uta Gassen Effect” or “Kouhaku Effect” for short.

What this is in simple terms is the revival of popularity in an artists work after making and appearance on “Kouhaku Uta Gassen”.

For AKB48 this recent appearance has resulted in yet another history making time in their career. AKB48 scored an impressive 40.3% viewer ranking for their appearance on “Kouhaku Uta Gassen”; however, it is what immediately happened after their appearance, which is far more impressive.

AKB48 became the first female group to have four singles released in the same year, appear in the Oricon top ten at the same time. AKB48 saw all their releases that are still charting make spikes in sales , with  “Chance no Junban“ jumping up to #2 , “Heavy Rotation” to #3, “Beginner” to #5 and “Ponytail to Shushu” to #9. This impressive milestone was last achieved by a female artist in 1999 when Utada Hikaru, also placed four in the top ten.

With so many female idol groups having a number of good things starting to happen for them as we enter 2011, 2011 should be an enjoyable year in female idol genre.
